It’s February

It’s February

posted in: Life, Out & About

I couldn’t think of a more exciting title, so that’s what we’re going with, haha. Because indeed, it is February.

Things have been pretty busy lately, but in a good way. We’re getting close to finishing up the writing contest, and I’ll post more on that later. We got some pretty awesome and some quite interesting stories from the kids.

But in the most exciting news, it finally snowed. I’ve been waiting and waiting for it, and it finally came. We only really had one day of snow here in Nagoya, and it wasn’t enough to really cover the ground for any extended period of time (a few hours), but it was still nice to have. The trees always look gorgeous covered in snow. I forget how lovely it is.

The photo above is actually from last year, but I couldn’t resist. Seeing bicycles covered in snow isn’t something you usually (ever?) see in Canada, since hardly no one rides their bicycle once the weather gets too chilly. In that sense, people here are troopers. However, with just a small amount of snow there were chains going on tires. Being from Canada, I couldn’t help but find that somewhat amusing.

Just a few photos of the snow from last year. I didn’t take many this year because it happened during a work day, so I spent most of the day inside teaching, which is fine. I’m quite happy admiring the snow from inside a warm room.

One of my favourite parts of snowy weather, is seeing the snowmen that people build. Since I live downtown, you don’t really see too many snowmen, but these are the two I have happened across.

The one on the right, with the pylon hat, was made by the firemen, and sat right outside the fire station nearby. He’s holding an umbrella that says 「火の用心」 (Hi no Youjin; watch out for fire). Fitting for a snowman, seeing as he’d melt in a fire, haha.

This is totally unrelated to anything, but I really like the displays that Louis Vuitton has in their windows right now. I only took a photo of the main window, but even the little display windows have little cherries in them. It’s really cute. And who doesn’t love giant cupcakes!?

In other news, I’m going to get to be an extra on a nation-wide TV commercial! It’s nothing big, since I’ll just be in the background, but it’s still really cool. It’s being filmed on Monday. They said it’ll only take about four hours, and I hope it’s no longer than that, since I feel bad that my boyfriend will have to kill time while I’m there. But I’m excited about the opportunity.

Also, as a few people already know, my friends and I started the visual news website, Shattered-Tranquility.net. Originally it was four of us, then Yanique left. Then Hideko left. And recently, Mija left. So I’m … well, the only one left. Of course we have a great group of staff members, so the site has been able to keep going, and I hope it will continue to succeed. We’re doing a raffle right now, for anyone interested in visual bands, with some pretty cool prizes.

After that shameless plug, I’ll leave you with a drawing that one of my students did of me:
